Paignton, Torbay
A small local team building garden rooms, decking, patios and full garden makeovers. The same two faces turn up every morning.
Paignton is flatter and sandier than the rest of Torbay, particularly towards Preston and Goodrington. That makes digging out easier, but a sandy sub base needs compacting properly in layers or a patio will settle unevenly in its first year.
Most Paignton estates were built with side access and a driveway, so a digger can usually get round the back. That keeps groundwork costs down compared with the harbour side towns, and it means bigger jobs can run to a shorter timescale.
Post war and nineteen sixties semis dominate, most of them with long rectangular back gardens, and there are newer estates out around Clennon and Yalberton. Gardens here tend to be flat, generous and quietly underused, often a strip of lawn with a shed at the end. That is exactly why full makeovers come up more often in Paignton than anywhere else in the bay.
