Totnes gardens run from river silt down by the Dart to thin soil over slate up towards the Bridgetown side. The town slopes considerably, so a great many gardens are terraced already and the question is usually whether the existing terracing is sound.
The streets around the centre and up Fore Street are tight, and parking a van near the job is often the first problem to solve. Out towards Follaton and Bridgetown access is easier. We check access before quoting rather than after.
Listed and period properties near the centre, Victorian terraces climbing the hill, and larger detached houses on the edges towards Follaton. Conservation area rules apply across a good deal of the town and listed status applies to a surprising number of individual buildings. Both affect what can be built in a garden and which materials are acceptable, so it is worth checking early.
