Landscaping in Dartmouth

We can plan, design and build anything from a small courtyard to a complete makeover

Levels, walls, steps, paths and planting, worked out together before anything is dug.

Landscaping built for Dartmouth gardens

Hard landscaping, patios, decking, walls, steps, water features, driveways and lighting all need to be completed before we start the soft landscaping.

Old retaining walls are the whole game in Dartmouth. Assess them properly first, because building on a failing wall wastes everybody's money.

What you get

  • Levels and retaining sorted before anything else happens
  • Steps and paths set out so they are safe and comfortable to use
  • Retaining walls built to hold ground, not just to look the part
  • Planting chosen to suit the aspect and the soil

Working in Dartmouth

The ground

Dartmouth is built on the side of a hill running steeply down to the Dart, and almost nothing in the town is level. Shallow soil over slate is common, and a great many gardens exist at all only because somebody built a retaining wall a century or more ago. The condition of that wall usually decides what is possible in the garden above it.

Getting to the garden

This is the hardest town we work in for access, without much competition. Narrow lanes, flights of steep steps, almost nowhere to park a van and gardens that can only be reached on foot. Every bag of ballast and every board goes in by hand. That is reflected honestly in the price at the quote stage rather than discovered halfway through the week.

The houses

Period properties stacked up the hill, a high proportion of second homes and holiday lets, and courtyard gardens measured in feet rather than yards. Small, steep and rather beautiful describes most of what we see here. The compensation for the awkwardness is that a well finished Dartmouth garden usually comes with a view down the river that no amount of money could buy elsewhere.
