The ground
Dartmouth is built on the side of a hill running steeply down to the Dart, and almost nothing in the town is level. Shallow soil over slate is common, and a great many gardens exist at all only because somebody built a retaining wall a century or more ago. The condition of that wall usually decides what is possible in the garden above it.
