Decking in Dartmouth

Built to last

Timber or composite, built level and built to last, shaped around your garden.

Decking built for Dartmouth gardens

Decking turns an unusable slope into the best seat in the garden. Pressure treated timbers on reclaimed plastic feet, with the frame built properly first because that is the part that decides whether it is still solid in ten years.

Decking on a steep Dartmouth plot can create level ground where there is none, sometimes cantilevered out over the slope. Structurally it is the most demanding decking we build.

Large composite decking areas built across Devon, including sloping and awkward plots.

What you get

  • Composite for low upkeep, timber where the budget or the look calls for it
  • Frames built to take real weight, with proper posts and bearers
  • Steps and balustrade worked into the design, not added on afterwards

Working in Dartmouth

The ground

Dartmouth is built on the side of a hill running steeply down to the Dart, and almost nothing in the town is level. Shallow soil over slate is common, and a great many gardens exist at all only because somebody built a retaining wall a century or more ago. The condition of that wall usually decides what is possible in the garden above it.

Getting to the garden

This is the hardest town we work in for access, without much competition. Narrow lanes, flights of steep steps, almost nowhere to park a van and gardens that can only be reached on foot. Every bag of ballast and every board goes in by hand. That is reflected honestly in the price at the quote stage rather than discovered halfway through the week.

The houses

Period properties stacked up the hill, a high proportion of second homes and holiday lets, and courtyard gardens measured in feet rather than yards. Small, steep and rather beautiful describes most of what we see here. The compensation for the awkwardness is that a well finished Dartmouth garden usually comes with a view down the river that no amount of money could buy elsewhere.
