A patio is only as good as what sits under it. We dig out properly, lay a compacted sub base and set the falls so water runs away from the house rather than towards it.
Where the limestone is close to the surface the dig is harder work but the ground underneath is sound. Drainage needs thinking about, because water coming off a hillside garden has to go somewhere.

Much of Torquay sits on limestone, and it is rarely far down. On the hillside roads above the harbour we often hit rock within a spit of the surface, which changes how a base gets built and how retaining is handled. It is worth knowing that before a price is agreed rather than halfway through the dig.
The Victorian terraces around Warberry and Lincombe were built long before anyone owned a mini digger. Plenty of gardens are reached through the house or down a side passage, so material goes in by barrow. We work that into the quote rather than springing it on you later.
Large Victorian villas, many long since split into flats, sit alongside post war semis out towards Shiphay and Watcombe and newer housing at the edges of town. What ties them together is the ground. A great many Torquay back gardens rise steeply away from the house and have never been levelled properly, so sloping plots are the norm here rather than the exception.
